One month left before the New Year 2020 and it is time to think of what we have achieved in the current year and build plans for the new one. We live in exponential times, and change is happening faster than ever before. The New Year is rapidly nearing. So let’s make a pause in our everyday exhausting routine or fast changing life pace …. and think, reflect, analyze and discuss.
This is the time when so many people make New Year resolutions on the personal level. With the holiday season already upon us many people are indulging in retrospection and reevaluating some of their life choices.
When we reflect we prepare ourselves for the next step of our life journey. But it is also an opportunity to stop and check a direction for the companies we run, for business we want to build, or new ideas we want to realize.
The majority of people fail to stick to their resolutions because for many of us they are just wishes that may come true. For companies the New Year resolutions are goals which gives them a completely different perspective. Why goals? Because goals are specific, much more actionable, and more effective.
I love reflecting, questioning things, building and creating new ideas. I also like planning and forecasting. This is probably one of the most important things I’ve got from my childhood. I remember when I was a 10 years old girl and started playing chess professionally, I learned looking one step ahead, thinking of what would be the next move, and what my counterpart would do and analyzing a whole set of different options in my head.
Chess is a relentless building strategies exercise. Later at the International MBA program at IE business school it helped me a lot to solve scale strategies cases of some of the most famous international brands. But what really has been and still helps me to build vision and plans - it is an ongoing practice with the companies I run and startups I invest in or advise to. This year at Imaguru we decided to reserve 2 weeks of late December for just planning, analyzing and creating new ideas.
Well, now is your chance to sit down and prepare a list of important goals you want to achieve in your business. Unlike personal New Year resolutions they should be measurable, specific and ambitious. Your goals should make you feel a bit uncomfortable or scared, but at the same time excited. It is OK to have a great ambitionsince you then start small with the implementation, and break down the big, daunting tasks into more manageable ones.
Think of what would you need to have achieved in 12 months, 6 months or each week? Have the big goal, transform it into smaller goals and focus solely on achieving the small ones. Focus is very important - choose three or four goals to work on so that you’re not overwhelmed by them.
Another great advice from a book I recently read is consistency. Make your bed is a book by Admiral McRaven I bought at Stanford Book Store a couple of months ago. When I took the book in my hands, a store facilitator approached me and told me the story behind the book. Being a soldier at the Navy SEAL training he was among the first to take lessons from Admiral McRaven which laid out in his #1 New York Times bestseller book. It is a powerful book that explains how little things can change your life.
Finally, New Year period is just the right time to add a bit of magic, surprise and creativity to the way we run business. Especially before the start of the year with this magic number 2020. While we plan, we don't have a clue what the future will bring. It terrifies us.Children and curious minds love that! So wake the children! Let them stay up and build your BIG GOALS 2020!
